Talking Style With Demy De Zeeuw – BALR.

It might have been his football skills that first brought Demy de Zeeuw to our attention, but since the launch of his lifestyle brand BALR. in 2013 he racked up an impressive list of achievements in the fashion world. Despite his retirement, he still remains a top scorer in our book when it comes to style and entrepreneurship. We sat down with the creative mind behind BALR. to chat style tips, travel essentials, and running his own business.

As a football player you reached the top in the Netherlands – winning the 2009-2010 Dutch Cup with Ajax Amsterdam, to name something – but not world class. Does that motivate you to build a world famous company?
“I think playing in the semi-finals and making the World Cup’s final is world class! But yes, the clubs I’ve played for weren’t the biggest in the world. It’s not particularly my drive, but I really want BALR. to be mentioned in the same breath as the classic brands. We’re growing fast, but building a brand takes time. We still have a way to go.”

If you had to compare your football position to your current role at BALR., do you see yourself as a allround midfielder as well?
“Yes, they’re pretty similar. I’m creative and do a million things at the same time, but I always get the job done. I love the complete design process, whether it’s designing clothes or a yacht like I’ve done recently. Besides designing, I spend a lot of time collaborating with other people and brands. So yes, playing the midfield is also a good fit at BALR.”

We are in love with your daughter Roqi and her amazing style. Are you planning on turning more kids into mini-fashionistas with a children’s collection?
“I won’t say we’ll never make a children’s collection, but our priority is to conquer the world as a brand for men and women.”

Talking about style: who is your style icon?
“I personally don’t really have any style icons. David Beckham is an icon, but his style isn’t that special. I find more inspiration on Instagram, to be honest.”

How would you describe your own style?
“I love casual chic. I always combine BALR. items with some of the more classic brands. Saint Laurent is one of my favourites, their items are timeless.”

So could you round-up those things that every man should have in his closet?
“A jacket. It’s a single item that can make an outfit. And sneakers are really important as well. Sometimes, I see guys who’ve really spent time on their outfit, but their shoes are old and dirty. That’s a no-go for me.”

And in his suitcase?
“Sunglasses, because I always fly to the sun! A power bank to keep up with all social channels and email. Swim shorts for a little bit of poolside chilling. And I always bring a nice jacket in case I have a last-minute event. Oh, and my phone of course. I can’t live without it!”
